EPA Reboots Cleanup Of Old Area Superfund Site

The EPA is restarting the cleanup for one of Houston - and the nation’s - first Superfund Sites.

From 1968 to 1981, the Crystal Chemical Company allowed arsenic and other chemicals to seep into the soil around its facility in Westchase, next to Beltway 8.

It was one of the first sites named to the Superfund National Priorities List in 1983.  The EPA put a number of protections in place, but in their last review of the site, site managers determined that more needs to be done to protect the public and environment in the long run.

Now the agency is trying to determine the next steps to ensure that the site is effectively cleaned up. It held a public hearing on Monday, September 15, 2025 and now managers are seeking public comments on the cleanup.  The comment period will be open until October 15th.
